Things to Consider When Choosing a Wool Suit

So you're in the market for a new men's wool suit? While suits are available in more than a dozen different fabrics, wool remains one of the most popular choices. But if you want a wool suit that's going to offer you years of use, it's important to choose the right one.

Weight

When choosing a weight suit, pay close attention to its weight, because this will have a direct impact on both its comfort and appearance. The weight of a wool suit is denominated by one-square yard piece. So a suit that's labeled 12-14 ounces weighs 12-14 ounces per one-square yard of fabric. This is considered to be a heavier wool suit, making it ideal for the cold fall and winter temperatures. Wool suits are also available in 12-14 ounces, 10-11 ounces, and even 7-8 ounces. Generally speaking, you should stick with heavier wool suits for cold weather and lighter suits for warm weather.

100% Wool or Wool Blend?

Something else to consider when choosing a wool suit is whether to choose a 100% pure wool suit or a blend of two or more different fabrics. It's not uncommon for manufacturers to include cashmere or cotton in their wool suits. Blended materials such as this can make the suit lighter, at which point it becomes a better choice for the warmer summer months. Assuming you plan on wearing your suit during the winter, however, it's probably best to stick with 100% wool.

Color

Of course, you should also consider the color of your wool suit. The four primary colors used in men's business attire suits consist of black, light grey, dark grey, and navy. If you are struggling to find a suit, you really can't go wrong with either of these colors. Black, for instance, a universally sound suit color that's perfect for every occasion. Whether you're attending a business meeting, taking a business trip, or just going out to dinner with friends, it offers a timeless style that's easy on the eyes.

Buttons

How many buttons do you want to sport on your wool suit? The vast majority of single-breasted wool suits feature either two or three buttons. However, there are some available with up to four buttons. Keep in mind that the more buttons your suit has, the longer it will look when worn. This can either help or hurt your appearance, depending on your height. For shorter men, it's recommended that you choose a suit with no more than three buttons.
