How to Wear a Suit Without a Tie

Ties are often viewed as an essential component to a men's suit. While it doesn't serve any functional purpose, it helps to complete the look by adding color and/or patterns to a man's outfit. Of course, there are times when you may not have the luxury of wearing a tie, or maybe you find them too constricting and uncomfortable to wear. Regardless of the reason, you CAN wear a suit without a tie.

Focus on The Collar

If you plan on wearing a suit without a tie, make sure you collar is fitted, fastened, and not bunched up around the neckline. Without a tie to attract attention, the focus will be on your collar. This can either help or hurt your look depending on how it's done. Leaving the collar unbuttoned and bunched up will create a messy appearance that does your suit no justice. On the other hand, maintaining a clean, fastened collar will have the opposite effect by adding a bold new aesthetic element.

Shoes

We've talked about this before on the StuidoSuits blog, but it's worth mentioning again that your shoes will have a significant impact in the appearance of your suit, especially if you intend on ditching the tie. So, what shoes should you wear? It really depends on the other elements of your suit, such as the color of your pants, the color of your shirt, whether or not you are wearing accessories, etc. With that said, it's usually best to choose a pair of shoes that match with one or more colors within your suit. If you are wearing a black undershirt, for instance, try wearing black loafers.

Solid Colors

Because there's a less focus on the neckline, it's recommended that you choose a solid color suit over a multi-colored one. You really can't go wrong with a solid black suit paired with matching black shoes. This is a simple yet stunning combination that's next-to-impossible to mess up.

Wear an Undershirt

Let me rephrase that -- you should try wearing an undershirt in a different color than your overshirt. Why is this important? Well, you need some type of visual element to break up the monotonous look of a suit without a tie. One of the easiest solutions to this problem is wearing an undershirt featuring a different color. And if you really want to go the extra mile, try wearing an undershirt that contrasts to the color of your overshirt.
