When was the last time you organized your clothes closet? Most men rarely, if ever, organize their wardrobe. When they purchase a new shirt, jacket or tie, they'll add it to their collection by placing it on a hanger. Over time, however, this can result in a massive buildup of clothes, so much in fact that you are unable to find any one particular item. Sound familiar? If so, you should follow the steps outlined below to restore order to your clothes closet.
Spring Cleaning
The first step in creating a well-organized closet is to go through and remove any garments or accessories that you no longer wear. I know many people (myself included) are reluctant to get rid of clothes, assuming they may wear them in the future. But if you haven't worn a particular garment in several years, it's doubtful that you'll ever wear it again. Rather than having it take up valuable space, you should consider either selling or donating it. Closet space is a valuable commodity, so you'll want to free up as much of it as possible.
Store Out-of-Season Clothes Elsewhere
Try to get into the habit of storing your out-of-season clothes and accessories in a location other than your main closet. If you have a spare bedroom, for instance, you can store them here to free up additional closet space. There's really no point in keeping your heavy winter coats right next to your warm weather clothes. Unless an unexpected Ice Age hits, chances are you won't be wearing them. Go ahead and move all of your out-of-season clothes from your closet.
Organize By Style
If you asked ten different fashion experts how to best organize a clothes closet, you would probably get ten different answers. Everyone has their own system or strategy when it comes to wardrobe organization. However, a simple and effective technique that's guaranteed to work is to organize your garments according to style. If you have a mix of dress shirts, casual t-shirts, button-ups, etc., go through and group each of these garments together. The next time you need to find a particular shirt or garment, you'll have an easier time choosing the "perfect" one.
These are just a few tips to keep in mind the next time you organize your closet.
