Summer Skincare 101

The summer season is officially here, which is apparent from the scorching-hot temperatures so many regions are experiencing. While this time of year is often characterized by fun-in-the sun and much-needed vacations, it can also wreck havoc on your skin. The combination of heat and sunlight creates a dangerous cocktail for the skin, which is why it's a good idea to follow some simple steps to protect your skin during the summer.

Wear Sunscreen Lotion

Let's go ahead and get the obvious out of the way: wear sunscreen lotion. I know this probably sounds like common sense, but you would be surprised to learn just how many people bask under the summer sun without any form of protection. According to American Academy of Dermatologists (AAD), roughly 1 in 3 Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. Prolonged exposure to sun is the single greatest risk factor associated with skin cancer, so wear sunscreen lotion! A high-SPF sunscreen lotion will block the sun's cancer-causing ultraviolet rays, significantly reducing your risk of skin cancer while promoting healthy, youthful skin in the process.

Moisturize

Skin dryness is an all-too-common occurrence during the summer. You may notice your skin feeling rough at first, and if left untreated, it may flake or even crack. To prevent this from happening, it's recommended that you moisturize your skin on a daily basis, using a high-quality cream or lotion. The best time to moisturize is immediately after you take a bath or shower, as your pores will be open, allowing the lotion to penetrate deeper.

Use a Humidifier

If you struggle with excessively dry skin during the summer (which is fairly common), it may take more than just a moisturizing cream or lotion to keep it under control. If this sounds like a familiar problem, try installing a humidifier in your bedroom. Humidifiers work by releasing water vapor in the atmosphere, some of which will land on your skin. Keep in mind, however, that too much moisture vapor van have a negative impact on your skin health. The ideal level of humidity is around 40-50%, so strive for this amount in your home and workplace. These are just a few tips to promote healthy skin this summer. Above all else, though, be sure to wear sunscreen lotion when staying outside for 30 minutes or longer at a time.
