Morning Suits 101: What You Should Know

When researching the different types of men’s suits, you may come across something called a “morning suit.” Based on the name alone, it’s difficult to determine what exactly a morning suit consists of. So today we’re going to take a closer look at this unique style of formal wear, revealing the characteristics of a morning suit.

Morning Suits: the Basics

A morning suit is essentially a formal daytime dress code consisting of a matching morning coat, waistcoat, and trousers. While there are dozens of different styles and colors from which to choose, the most popular is grey (referred to as Morning Grey). The less formal variant of the morning suit is called a Stroller.

Morning suits were once a popular dress code among men back in the 19th century, but their popularity has since declined. The advent of the modern-day suit (trousers and jacket) have replaced the waistcoat. And without the waistcoat, there’s really no need for men to wear a morning suit. With that said, some men still prefer the unique and classic look of a morning suit as opposed to modern-day suits.

Naming

This outfit was given the name “morning suit” because gentlemen used to wear single-breasted morning coats during the mornings when riding a horse. Few men today ride horses while wearing a suit, but the term has stuck.

Tips on Wearing a Morning Suit

  • Choosing a single-breasted waistcoat. Double-breasted waistcoats were once popular nearly a century ago, but the de-facto standard is now the single-breasted variant.
  • Consider a waistcoat with silk piping along the edges for nuanced style.
  • As always, choose socks that match the color of your trousers. If your trousers are black, wear black dress socks. If your trousers are grey, wear grey dress socks.
  • Wear black or brown oxford shoes, depending on the color of your suit.
  • If you want to add a modern twist to the traditional morning suit, try placing a pocket square or handkerchief in your coat pocket.
  • Make sure your tire is not visible through your shirt collar. If it is, pop your collar back up and re-tie it.

The morning suit is a traditional men’s formal wear that’s characterized by the use of a waistcoat. Today, waistcoats are rarely worn, although there are a few occasions in which they are preferred. Regardless, you can follow the tips outlined above to achieve the perfect look with your morning suit.
