How to Wear a Men's Waistcoat

How to Wear a Men's Waistcoat

The waistcoat (also known simply as a vest) was once a standard garment in men's suits. It wasn't until the 1940s when it was gradually phased out in favor of a standard jacket. Fast forward to the 1970s and few men wore waistcoats. But waistcoats are slowly making a comeback in the world of fashion, with guys young and old seeking to wear them.

The Size

If you're thinking about sporting a waistcoat, there are a few things you'll need to consider. First and foremost, it's essential that you get the correct size. If the waistcoat is too large, it will create the dreaded "clothes hanger effect," in which it appears that your body is clothes hanger with a vest draped over it. But if it's too small, it will be constricting and downright uncomfortable to wear. Make sure the waistcoat is form-fitting around your shoulders and midsection, but not so much that it pulls on the buttons when you lean forward or backwards.

Color/Style

The vast array of waistcoats available on the market can make choosing one a daunting task. Should you choose a single color waistcoat or one with a plaid or checkered design? To better answer this question, you'll have to think about when and how you'll be wearing it. If you're wearing it to formal event, then perhaps you should stick with a single-color style. On the other hand, if it's for a casual or semi-formal event, a patterned design can work.

Leave Bottom Button Unfastened

Men's waistcoats come in a variety of different styles, ranging from just one buttons up to four buttons. Assuming your waistcoat has at least two buttons, however, you should leave the bottom button unfastened. Doing so will create a clean, tidy look while allowing you to sit down with greater comfort.

Waistcoats and Jackets

When wearing a jacket or blazer with a waistcoat, make sure the two garments don't clash with one another. There's nothing wrong with creating a layered look, but your jacket or blazer should feature a different color than your waistcoat.

Accessorize Your Waistcoats

Accessories can make or break the appearance of a men's waistcoat. For instance, a pair of aviator-style sunglasses and a matching wristwatch can compliment the colors of your waistcoat, enhancing your appearance with a greater level of aesthetics. Stick with a few, high-quality accessories to enhance your appearance.
